The Xtracycle at our local ‘packstation’: these automated postboxes are being introduced as an ‘environmental’ way to get parcels, because they’re supposed to reduce truck movements. Of course they are often in places where you need a car to get to which rather spoils it, but at least I can be sure that at the 1.5 kilometres from here to our apartment are carbon free, thus maintaining my personal smug green glow.

They look very similar to the drive-thru drop-off boxes at our library, with a similar car-oriented problem. Fortunately ours aren’t too busy, and one can usually bike-thru without car exhaust inhalation or traffic competition.

Hi John: a library with a drive thru? At least we’ve not got that far yet: this is just in a car park of a supermarket that’s on the edge of town. You could probably walk there from most places but it’s way too easy to drive…
