Went out with The Boys to ‘Haus Des Waldes‘; a permanent, interactive exhibition about forests, ecosystems, biodiversity, and their role in our lives. They like making sculptures of of natural materials and this one cropped up since our last visit.
I’d like to think I could make something like this in the Very Smallholding, but I probably wouldn’t have the determination to collect all those sticks.

I love it! It’s great fun and it is impermanent, so it can change with whatever people, or the elements, do to it. Sort of Andy Goldsworthy without all the pretentiousness.

In my experience sticks collect themselves and dump themselves wherever in the garden/vineyard/vegetable patch they’re most likely to be in the way. Making sculpture from them might be a good idea – better, anyway, than leaving them to jab into a sandalled foot. Or maybe burning them…?

Thanks for the thoughts…
Iain: It seems to be one of a series: the building hosted pictures of others in India and Nepal, all circles made from the materials around them. What astounds me is that this is in a publically accesible place that isn’t locked at night, yet the scuplture isn’t damaged. I thought the first ‘changes’ that would have taken place would have been the stone bits going through the massive windows a few metres away…
Nick: I don’t have many sticks, just brambles, which already cover most of the garden…

Looks great! Interesting way to build a campfire.
